Dear Mr. President
I am very concerned about the conditions in Nairobi's slums where 127,000 people live under the constant threat offorced evictions from their homes.
The Kenyan government has for decades failed to take the minimum steps required to respect, protect and fulfil the right to adequate housing for the residents of Nairobi's slums and informal settlements.
As the Kenyan president you have the authority to ensure that these people live a life with basic human rights. I urge you to:
- Immediately cease all forced evictions, legislate and enforce a clear prohobition on forced evictions, and develop and adopt guidelines for evictions that comply with international human rights law.
Until such steps have been taken I urge you to impose a moratorium on mass evictions. - Ensure genuine consultation with the affected communities to identify all feasible alternatives to evictions and develop a comprehensive relocation and compensation plan.
- Ensure a dignified life for the millions of people living in the slums of Kenya and ensure that they have access to basic human rights.
Yours sincerely,
